How do You Find a Niche to Work In

November 10th, 2009 · No Comments

Many new internet marketers find it difficult to identify the niche they want to work in. They don’t know how to look for one, or even think about something that could be relevant to them.

A good beginning off point when hunting for a slot is to listen what the market place is interested in. You will need to hang out in social bookmarking and networking sites to get a feel for what is being discussed and what’s of interest to the web visitor.

This should be listening and speaking on forums, reading the top articles that make it to the front page on Digg or Reddit, seeing what folk are tweeting about on Twitter and what they could be writing about in Article Directories or setting up lenses on Squidoo.

Also see what’s of interest in the offline world. Read paperspapers, watch talk shows on TV, grab the odd magazine and in general see what looks to be of interest to folk right now. You will be ready to see a trend developing.

Once you have a list of subjects that you may be interested in, read more about them and see whether you might work with them over a period of time. Also search for websites and blogs that are operating in this environment. See what they are offering and resolve whether they are successful in selling their products. Products sold via associate networks are rated as to their achievement.

Your next bit of research will involve looking for profit-making keywords that would fit the niche and seeing whether there may be products that you could make for these keywords or whether there are items already available for sale.

Above all else though, pick a niche and start. Don’t spend months trying to get a niche. You can always move on if it does not work for you. Set up costs for blogs are cheap and it’s worth your while to get going.

You’ve got a much better possibility of success if you really try out a spot rather than rambling around aimlessly trying to find something that appeals to you.
